You should hire a VC lawyer the moment you decide to raise outside capital, specifically before you sign a term sheet. Once you sign that initial document, it is very difficult to walk back terms you agreed to, even if they are non-binding. Ideally, you want them involved early enough to "clean up" your corporate structure and intellectual property assignments so you look professional and low-risk when investors start digging.

Think of a general corporate lawyer as a "general practitioner" doctor who handles day-to-day health, while a VC lawyer is a "surgeon" who specializes in complex operations.
